Inspirational Birth Stories In Their Own Words:

...We got to the hospital (finally!) and my contractions were steadily coming every 2 minutes. I practically ran into the hospital and Mike left the van outside the entrance with the hazard lights on. My doula and midwife were there waiting and my midwife got me right into a room (even though the waiting room was full of laboring women and they were saying there were no rooms available!). Once we got there, I climbed on the bed, took off everything from the waist down and laid on my side. I leaned into Mike while my doula, Juliet, pushed on my lower back. The back labor was very strong, just like it was with Gavin.

They had to take blood for my cord blook kit and they had to start an IV for my antibiotics due to GBS. I had my midwife and 2 other nurses doing this while I breathed and relaxed through the contractions. At one point I had a nurse taking my blood pressure and it glanced at the machine and it said my blood pressure was 98/65 or so. I heard the one nurse say to the other nurse that when Moms use self-hypnosis they almost always have really low blood pressure. Very Happy I remember thinking how neat it was that she said that! After they got all the blood draws and the IV antibiotics started, we dimmed the lights and my doula put one of my CD's on.

Patrick checked me and I was 4-5cm but contractions were right on top of each other. Everything was so intense but because of my Hypnobabies practice my perception was never one of "pain" but just "intensity". Each contraction felt like a freight train going through me---so intense but I never once thought of it as "pain". It was amazing.

Within about 40 minutes of being checked I started to feel some pressure so Patrick checked me again and I was complete! The next contraction took over my body and I could feel the baby moving down low. We tried the a ll-fours position because of my intense back labor but I didn't like it at all and went back on my side. Two of the most intense and amazing contractions later, Jude was out (only one hour after arriving at the hospital!). Patrick laid him on my chest and Patrick reminded Mike to look to see what we had. Wink Mike announced it was a boy!

I just can't even put this moment into words. There aren't words for it. It was just wonderful.

...All the while Phyllis cooed hypnotic sweetness to me and I floated into that great embracing hypnobabies space. A delicious birth. An easy birth. Gentle opening, deep relaxation, waves of comfort. My eyes were closed, and the friendly words floated by. I had an amazingly tuned in body to dance the birth dance with in warm, comfortable water, the primal comfort of my mother nearby, the silent watchful presence of the midwives. All was well.

Mostly the midwives watched keenly and took note without unnecessary questions or investigation. Why meddle with something that was going so magnificently well? They checked the wee one's heart beat every now and again. I asked an occasional question. Towards the end they asked me to feel with my own fingers and tell them what was happening, rather than poking around themselves. They were magnificent.

...Just before the moment where the widest part of the head passes through the cervix, I remembered the stories I heard about the "ring of fire" and felt a pang of fear. Would I be able to take this imminent pain? Just then I felt an amazing surge of pleasure in my body, that oxytocin surge you get when you're giving birth without drugs. And the most right thing in the world was to give it another push and feel that head slide on through. No pain. Ecstacy. Holding that pointed little head in my hands was unspeakable joy. Another push and the rest of the body slid out. I pulled him out of the water up to my chest and melted into an ocean of love.
